York art gallery According to McGee continues its celebration of rising artists with its next exhibition, ‘Brutalism and Black Ink’, a duo show from Angus Vasili and Adrian Maidman.
Wales-based artist Vasili is no stranger to the McGee gallery after a series of successful exhibitions in ‘16 and ‘17, but Maidman, new to York and a debutant exhibitee, brings for the first time his crisply composed black ink output.
Fresh from the launch of ‘Dilemmas for a New Decade’, the latest series of happenings at the gallery in celebration of its 16th anniversary, Adrian was obviously pleased to have shared his inaugural exhibition with art from global contemporary colossi Banksy, Grayson Perry, and Jim Moir, better known as comedian Vic Reeves. ‘Dilemmas for a New Decade’ is set to continue in 2020 with a riff of happenings, and Adrian is keen to celebrate his continuing involvement.
How does it feel to be a young exhibitee in a city like York?
Exciting. York is well known for its vibrant artistic activity and I am lucky to be part of it. There is a wide appreciation for new ideas in this city which allows for some fantastic exhibition to take place.
What state do you think the arts industries are in on a wider level (UK)?
Interest in art is being rapidly shifted over to new online digital formats and this has created a larger audience but also an oversaturation of content. I prefer the disconnected process of traditional art practices but for something to be noticed, it must have some online presence.
How do you see you art evolving? What are your next plans?
Refined concepts on a larger scale. A lot of my work is a process of experimentation and I want to continue refining my ideas to a more consistent level of a higher quality. Spending more time on a piece is challenging but a lot more rewarding than bouncing from one idea to another. I also wish to create more work on a larger scale. Larger artworks require substantially more focus and reveal challenges that you don’t get when working on a smaller scale but once the work is complete, it becomes very clear that it is always worth the extra effort.
