Theatre Review: The Scarecrows' Wedding

Scamp Theatre

Following on from a superb run of last years ‘Stick Man’, Scamp Theatre Ltd return to The Great Yorkshire Fringe with a scrumptious adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s beloved tale ‘The Scarecrows’ Wedding’, directed by Eva Simpson. Full of the usual enchanting storytelling magic, Scamp Ltd bring to life the charm of the countryside and it’s lively residents on the farm, revolving around the two utterly loveable Scarecrows’ Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay who are set to wed. Preparing for the big day, their love is tested as they venture on and away from the farm making it the best wedding yet, the wedding that no one will ever forget!

Scamp Theatre’s spell is beautifully woven on it’s audience as they welcome you into the White Rotunda Tent with open arms, barrels of hay, and the uplifting sounds of the banjo and accordion, played and sung gloriously by the cast Joanna Brown, Sam Heron and Mark Kane.

Capturing the heart warming story perfectly, the company present immaculate attention to detail with a bright and bold country bumpkin set, brimming with imaginative props that left the audience smiling and giggling all the way through, as well as plenty of interactive singing, puppetry, audience participation and a hilarious host of characters brought to life with gusto and oozing with fun!

High praise must be given for the sheer talent and tightness of the trio cast and their naturally flawless performance. The cast’s energy soared throughout and was incredibly infectious to watch. Both children and adults, were captivated by the show and it’s beautiful messages of love, belief and determination. I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions, particularly at Reginald Rake’s outstanding number with fantastic lyrics to keep the adults amused just as much as the little ones. My four and a half year old was utterly lost in the story and begged me to let her see it again, needless to say she is even now singing to herself about Scarecrows and weddings, and telling anyone she can just how much she loved the show. If that isn’t a pretty powerful spell they’ve cast, I don’t know what is!

Scamp Theatre continue to spread their gift of bringing gorgeous, inventive, stimulating theatre and storytelling to families everywhere and I am thrilled we had the chance to catch them here at The Great Yorkshire Fringe once again. The festival really wouldn’t be the same without them each year.

Your imagination and heart will be stirred, as you leave behind the everyday for an hour and enter into a story brought to life with love and passion. Suitable for small ones and bigger ones too, this is a show you won’t want to miss!

You can catch The Scarecrows’ Wedding at The Great Yorkshire Fringe daily Tuesday 25th July until Sunday 6th August. Box Office - 01904 500600
